Of course, fans would notice the stark difference and the producers say they were ready for a backlash. One obvious distinction is that McCook is blonde while Ephraim is a brunette. Apart from being namesakes (coincidence much?), the two actresses don’t really have much in common, at least where physical appearances are concerned. That included Mandy Baxter, played by Molly Ephraim, for the first seven seasons. One of the reasons as to why the show was such a hit, even coming back after being canceled briefly after Season 7, was the cast. So, that’s how Molly McCook replaced Molly Ephraim. Last Man Standing may have just wrapped, but the FOX program starring Tim Allen soared for many years on the network. This left the producers with no choice but to look for a replacement. Her numerous screen engagements meant she simply couldn’t be available to film the sitcom. When Fox swooped in a year later in 2017, it was a little too late to get Ephraim to pick up from where she had left off in her role as Mandy Baxter. Well, according to show producers, the talented actress moved on to other gigs after ABC said it wouldn’t renew Last Man Standing after the sixth season. So, why did Molly Ephraim stop featuring on the popular family sitcom?
Early fans of the show will remember that Alexander Krosney, who played Kristen Baxter, the oldest of Mike Baxter’s three daughters, was swapped for Amanda Fuller in season 2. This wasn’t the first time the main cast members had been replaced. In her stead was Molly McCook, who we can’t help but notice doesn’t resemble Ephraim in the least. However, one face was conspicuously missing-that of Molly Ephraim who played the ditzy Mandy Baxter. For just one episode in the first season, the Disney Channel icon played Ryan Vogelson. Just like at the beginning of season two, the network wanted to age up the character and therefore had to recast him.įinally, you can't mention Last Man Standing without talking about Nick Jonas. After five years of playing Tim Allen's grandson, the network decided not to renew Flynn's contract for the seventh season. In total, four different actors played the character with Flynn Morrison being the most prolific. After all, the character started the series as just a little boy. Of course, the character of Boyd Baxter has been replaced the most. They were simply asked to step into the shoes of an existing character that fans had already come to know and love. Both Molly and, especially, Amanda took a lot of flack on social media for no fault of their own.
Much like when Molly McCook took over the role of Mandy from Molly Ephraim (after she started a new chapter in her life when ABC initially canceled the series) fans were furious with the Kristin Baxter recasting. Molly McCook took over the roles, much to the chagrin of some of the fans. Therefore, her character ended up getting recast. Even though main cast members Nancy Travis, Hector Elizondo, Christopher Sanders, Jonathan Adams, Jordan Masterson, and Amanda Fuller all decided to reteam with Tim for the Fox reboot, Molly Ephraim decided not to come back as Mandy. Many of whom were already moving on to other projects.
This process wasn't easy, however, as it caused numerous actors to have to go in and renegotiate their contracts. While ABC wasn't interested in continuing with a show that actually made them money, Fox decided to take a chance and renewed it for a couple of additional seasons.

Lovers of the show, Tim Allen, and those who wanted a more conservative comedy on TV petitioned ABC to renew the series. Word on the street is, the network thought the show was too conservative.
